Macau Tourism Heats Up: Hotels See Steady Occupancy, Package Tours Surge
Macau’s tourism industry is showing encouraging signs: package tours are growing significantly and hotel occupancy rates are steady.
In April, the percentage of hotels occupied was 83.3%, which was almost the same as in March and 4% higher than the previous year.
With 85.1% of the total, five-star hotels led the pack, followed by four-star (79.6%) and three-star (81.1%) accommodations.
There was a 5.6% increase in hotel visits, with mainland China leading the way with an increase of +11.8%. Interestingly, tourism to Hong Kong dropped by 35%, whereas tourism to South Korea (up 245%) and Taiwan (up 96.1%) increased significantly.
Travel packages are the real success story. The astonishing 123% increase in mainland Chinese tourists was the main driver of the 142% year-over-year surge in April arrivals. There was a 980% growth in international package tours, with Malaysia and South Korea leading the way.
The first quarter of 2024 presents an even more promising picture. While the overall number of guests increased by 29.8%, the average hotel occupancy increased by 8.4%. Package travel rose by an astounding 258% over that time, with mainland China being the market leader.
These positive developments show that Macau’s tourism sector is recovering nicely, helped by a rise in the variety of travelers and a high demand for pre-arranged trips.
