Paddy Power Pulls Euro 2024 Ad Starring Boris Johnson Amid Employee Backlash
The well-known betting company Paddy Power has chosen to remove their Euro 2024 advertising campaign starring Boris Johnson in response to criticism from its staff.
The advertisement, which showed the former prime minister with an England jersey bearing the words “I told you I would get us back in Europe,” caused a stir within the company’s Dublin headquarters.
Workers had concerns about Johnson’s promotion—a contentious figure because of his ties to Brexit—as well as the use of humor with a Brexit tone.
The parent company of Paddy Power, Flutter Entertainment, acknowledged that talks had taken place with Johnson’s team, but it also announced that Johnson will not be taking part in the promotion.
A representative for Flutter Entertainment voiced optimism over potential collaborations with Johnson’s group in the wake of the defeat.
This action continues Paddy Power’s controversial run of commercials, some of which have already been criticized for being offensive and insensitive.
With a history of confrontational advertising, Paddy Power ran a campaign in 2022 mocking Boris Johnson, using trucks with slogans like “Goodbye Boris” and “It’s Hard to Keep Up.”
The company’s response to internal dissension and the continuous debate regarding the suitability of its advertising strategies is demonstrated by this latest measure.
