Indonesia Forms Task Force to Crack Down on Illegal Online Gambling
Although online gambling is illegal in Indonesia, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (Kominfo) has said that it will develop a dedicated task force to address the problem.
Bernama reports that the task force will consist of representatives from various government agencies, such as the police, the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), and the Financial Services Authority (OJK).
In addition, cooperation with Interpol is anticipated to address cross-border cases, recognizing earlier challenges in discouraging foreign operators.
The task force’s operational framework was outlined by Usman Kansong, the Director of the Ministry of Information and Public Communications.
The framework entails Kominfo overseeing the digital domain, OJK managing financial accounts, PPATK keeping an eye on cash transfers, and the police conducting arrest and investigative duties.
Reiterating the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to fighting online gambling, Minister Budi Arie advised internet service providers, cell carriers, and social media platforms to forbid any type of gambling advertising.
“We at the Ministry of Communication and Information are totally committed,” Minister Budi Arie stated, highlighting Kominfo’s joint initiatives to outlaw internet gaming.
This project is Indonesia’s most recent attempt to tackle illegal online gambling; earlier attempts were made in 2012 in response to concerns regarding a notable local gambling market during the 2012 European Football
Championship.
