China Southern Airlines launches new route between Beijing, Macau
China Southern Airlines aims to expand its international network by adding 17 new flights, and as part of that effort, the airline started a new route between Beijing and Macau on Monday, with the first aircraft taking off.
The new lines, which were unveiled at an event in Beijing, will connect Tehran, Amsterdam, London, Doha, and Riyadh, according to Reuters.
Executives from China Southern Airlines said that their objective is to increase their route network from 80% to 85% of 2019 levels by launching all of these new routes by October 26.
Following COVID-19, international travel from China has been slow. According to Reuters, China Southern Airlines reported a $567 million loss in 2023 as a result of issues including low consumer spending power, expensive jet fuel, supply chain interruptions, and depreciating yuan.
Following 5.15 million passenger movements in the previous year, Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) forecast in January that passenger traffic at the airport would increase by 10% to 15% annually by 2024.
