Macau airport likely to have handled 1.76 million passenger in first quarter of 2024
A press statement from Macau International Airport Co Ltd, the airport’s operator, states that 1.76 million passengers are expected to use the city’s primary aviation hub in the first quarter of this year.
This estimated figure represents a significant 1.3-fold rise year over year and a 75% recovery in passenger traffic as compared to the same quarter in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, CAM reported that, compared to the same period in 2019, the first-quarter recovery rate for air movements was 76% higher, or around 14,000 flights.
At the moment, the majority of flights out of Macau Airport are for use in mainland China. However, by introducing more direct international flights or planes that connect the airport to medium- and long-haul destinations from other locations, CAM hopes to strengthen its worldwide connectivity.
China Southern Airlines intends to launch service on the Beijing Daxing-Macau route on April 1, 2024, in order to accomplish this goal. Through Beijing Daxing International Airport, tourists will be able to fly from Macau to Russia while having their baggage checked.
In July of this year, Korean Air also plans to start operating flights from Macau to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The purpose of these flights is to improve Macau’s aviation connection by allowing passengers to connect to the Korean aviation network, which flies to locations in Europe and the US.
