NSW venue fined for placing ATM near gaming area

January 24, 2024 World Crime & LegaliGaming & Gambling

Liquor & Gaming NSW determined that the owner of Vbar, a venue located in inner Sydney, had committed a gambling offense.

The licensee installed an ATM in a room next to its gaming area, which is against the regulations, according to the regulating body. ATMs should be placed in entirely separate rooms.

By forbidding instant access to cash for numerous gambling withdrawals, this regulation aims to lessen harm. For those with a gambling addiction, the proximity of ATMs to casinos is seen as a danger factor.

The Local Court has mandated that the licensee pay AUD 5,500 toward the prosecutor’s fees. Liquor & Gaming NSW emphasized that any attempts to circumvent the law would be met with severe enforcement measures, restating its commitment to putting harm minimization measures into place.

The Magistrate confirmed the regulator’s accusation, finding that Vbar had unquestionably violated the gaming laws in NSW.
