Flights across all PH airports in 2023 surpasses pre-COVID levels

January 9, 2024 Philippines Industry Updates

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), there were 280,000 flights overall in 2023 across all Philippine airports, exceeding 2019 levels.

Not only the 44 commercial airports that CAAP directly administers, but all airports around the country are included in this figure. Additionally, with 279,953 flights in 2023 compared to 2019, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) recorded a 3% increase in aircraft movements at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Jaime Bautista, the secretary of transportation, highlighted MIAA’s efforts to expand and privatize NAIA in order to raise hourly aircraft movements from 40 to 44 to 48. While acknowledging the difficulties, Bautista expressed confidence in achieving the goal of increasing air traffic movement per hour, a task that had not before been routinely completed. Bautista emphasized the aim assigned to CAAP to increase air traffic movement per hour.

In comparison to pre-pandemic levels, domestic flights increased by 12% at the NAIA last year, but international flights accounted for 91% of the airport’s 2019 volume. This figure demonstrates the aviation industry’s resilience and rebirth in the Philippines.
