23 arrested after raid of illegal gambling den in Taichung

In late December, Taichung police arrested 23 persons and took NT$300,000 (about US$9,600) from an unauthorized gambling establishment.

Nestled in the North District of Taichung, the covert casino was located in the basement of a building on Wenxin Road. It was disguised as a ground-floor convenience store and offered card games like as baccarat and Texas Hold’em poker.

In order to avoid calling attention to itself, the organization used female traders dressed in holiday attire. To minimize haphazard parking and police inspection, the company rented three on-site parking spaces and employed three automobiles to transfer gamblers.

To look into any hidden companies such as casinos, online gambling dens, and fraud rings, the Second Precinct initiated “Clean Source Project 3.0” to examine high-rise buildings within its authority.

While examining a building on Wenxin Road, officers discovered evidence of a Texas Hold’em Poker Casino in the convenience store’s basement. After obtaining a search warrant from the Taichung District Court, they teamed up with another group to raid the facilities in late December 2023.

The 45-year-old supervisor, three on-site staff members, four female dealers, a lookout crew, and a counter accountant were among the 10 individuals connected to the gambling den that the police apprehended upon their arrival. Additionally, 13 gamblers who were present during the event were taken into custody.

Among the seized items were dice, poker cards, chips, and NT$300,000 in gambling profits. Following interrogation, the 13 gamblers were punished for violating the Social Order Maintenance Act, and the 10 workers were sent to the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation over gambling charges.
