NSW to introduce “jobs guarantee” legislation for Star Sydney workers

November 22, 2023 World Casino & HotelIndustry Updates

The New South Wales (NSW) state government in Australia is preparing to enact laws that will provide a “jobs guarantee” and protect the employment of almost 3,000 workers at The Star Sydney casino.

The statement comes after the NSW government and Star Entertainment Group and Crown Resorts recently reached a deal on higher casino tax rates; the details of this assurance are not yet revealed.

The Star Sydney has agreed to the terms of the agreement, and Crown Sydney has announced that it would restrict the hours that its VIP casino is open and cut 180 jobs. Both casinos’ table fees will increase as a consequence of the increased casino duty rates, which take effect on July 1, 2023.

Furthermore, until the new tariff plan takes effect on July 1, 2030, The Star will pay a transitional fee for poker machines.

The NSW government reacted to Crown Resorts’ news of job layoffs and operational changes at Crown Sydney, despite the government’s insistence that the increased casino tax rates do not change the agreements the Crown signed with the previous administration.

The two casino operators will have a conversation about the new legislative measures, which highlight continuous interaction with operational models and regulatory frameworks.

The relevance of these agreements was emphasized by NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, who described the previous government’s handling of the casino policy as an issue that needed to be fixed. He emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving jobs and encouraging ongoing dialogue with business stakeholders.
