Chinese embassy working to fight fraud, gambling in the Philippines
October 12, 2023 ChinaPhilippines
The Chinese embassy in the Philippines has disclosed that it has been effective in combating online fraud, telecoms fraud, and cross-border gaming with its counterpart. As a consequence of this partnership, three illegal offshore gambling operations were shut down, and around 400 Chinese citizens were returned this year after clearing identity checks.
The embassy has asked the Philippine government to take prompt action against offences involving Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). Despite the fact that POGOs are legally recognised service providers in the Philippines, they have been accused of assisting criminals and tax evaders.
The statement did not define “offshore gambling parks,” but it did emphasise that Chinese and Philippine law enforcement have lately collaborated on gambling-related investigations.
All forms of gambling, including online and international gambling by Chinese citizens, are illegal in China, and the government has consistently opposed and prosecuted them. China has also entered into bilateral agreements with nations in Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to increase cooperation in the fight against transnational crimes such as online gambling services targeting Chinese people.
