Ten People Detained for Creating Gambling Websites in Malaysia
Ten persons, including a 15-year-old and a woman accused of being involved in creating an internet gambling website, have been detained by police in Malaysia.
According to Perak police head Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department conducted multiple raids here yesterday based on information and intelligence.
As a cover, this syndicate rents two-story residences in residential areas.
In a statement released today, Mohd Yusri said that during the raids, police found illegal contact center operations taking place inside the homes.
Initial research, according to him, revealed that the syndicate was providing the service of creating websites with different kinds of online gambling games and software in response to requests from both domestic and foreign clients.
In the course of the raids, the police also confiscated a laptop, three computer sets, 34 mobile phones of various brands, four modems, and a piece of paper with dialogue scripts, the official added.
Except for the adolescent, who was freed on police bail today, Mohd Yusri stated that the accused will remain in custody until tomorrow.
The case is being looked into in accordance with Section 4 (1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act of 1953, which, if found guilty, carries a maximum penalty of RM50,000 in fines and three years in prison.
