8 Filipinos Who were Freed from Human Traffickers in Myanmar have Returned Home

February 16, 2023 MyanmarPhilippines Events & Announcements

Eight Filipinos who were being trafficked by Chinese criminal gangs have been released by authorities in the Philippines and Myanmar. They allegedly fell into cryptocurrency and illegal gambling schemes after being tricked into thinking they were going to Myanmar for legitimate employment.

According to Agence France-Press, Eduardo Jose de Vega, acting undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, was present when the group arrived early on Monday. When the four men and four women arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, he met them there and assisted in securing their release.

Upon the group’s return, Philippine senator Risa Hontiveros claimed that Chinese organizations were responsible for the action. She claimed they were operating fraudulent cryptocurrency and illicit gaming schemes, making Filipinos the primary target of human trafficking organizations.

Human trafficking in China is still widespread
There may still be 50 to 70 Filipinos working in Myanmar for Chinese fraudsters, according to Undersecretary de Vega. Chinese organized crime groups may be able to capture an additional 50 people in Laos and Cambodia. Authorities assisted at least 119 Filipinos in returning home last year, despite the fact that the activity has been going on for years.

The four guys who left Thailand to go work as trade agents had been recruited online. In reality, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the criminal group compelled them to work in call centers after trafficking them from Thailand to Myanmar. They were paid to con individuals into betting online or investing in cryptocurrencies.

However, Myanmar’s authorities had detained the women. They allegedly crossed the Myanmar-Thai Friendship Bridge, which connects the two nations and is only accessible to nationals of those two nations, to enter the country.

The women gave an explanation for their presence in Myanmar when they were apprehended. To arrange for their return, the authorities subsequently got in touch with the Philippines.

The DFA has cautioned Filipinos about responding to employment postings on social media. Many are fraudulent and act as fronts for human trafficking and unlawful hiring practices.

According to a statement made by the department, it is crucial that people follow the immigration laws of the Philippines in order to obtain a work visa and protect themselves. According to Undersecretary de Vega, Chinese con artists running schemes in Southeast Asia are eager to engage Filipinos since they have proficient English and computer skills.

According to local officials, several Filipinos and people of other nationalities were hired to work in the check-in desks at the airports of Yangon, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw. Additionally, they were hired to work for what appears to be a Chinese mafia cryptocurrency scheme.

Trafficking is still unchecked throughout Southeast Asia
Hontiveros has been active in assisting Filipinos flee Myanmar, where human trafficking is a pervasive crime. In a statement issued by her office, a woman who was rescued last month was quoted as saying that human traffickers had lured her to Cambodia with the prospect of employment in a contact center.

She discovered something quite different, according to the statement. The unnamed female was forced to work in slave-like conditions for 16 hours per day, seven days per week. Hontiveros claimed that her superiors mistreated other Filipino employees, and he came to the conclusion that more victims had also been sent to Myanmar.

Further from home, Filipino workers are encountering hard and hazardous working circumstances. Authorities in Kuwait learned of a burned body in the desert a few weeks ago. Upon closer examination, they discovered that it was Jullebee Ranara, a 35-year-old Filipina who had traveled to Kuwait in search of employment. The employee’s 17-year-old son is allegedly responsible for the brutal crime, according to the authorities, and she was pregnant at the time of her death.
