Increase of Japan tourists due to the end of COVID-19 limits reached to almost 1 million in November

December 22, 2022 Japan Events & Announcements

Data released on Wednesday revealed that visitor arrivals to Japan increased to about 1 million in November, the first full month since the country lifted COVID-19 regulations that had virtually put a stop to travel for more than two years (Dec 21).

The number of international tourists and business travelers increased to 934,500 last month, nearly double the number from October, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Arrivals were still almost two-thirds lower in 2019 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Prior to the publication of the data on Wednesday, Virgilio Russi, vice president of foreign sales for Air Canada, told Reuters that “the demand for Japan out of North America is quite high right now.”

According to Russi, business travelers are moving away from China, while vacationers are taking advantage of the weak yen to travel from Canada to Japan at a rate that is more than double what it was in 2019.

Japan is currently quite affordable from a cost standpoint, he noted.

The yen has increased this week as a result of the Bank of Japan’s unexpected policy shift, although it is still 13% lower this year compared to the US dollar. Analysts predict that China’s borders won’t reopen until March or April, despite the fact that its zero-COVID policy has started to loosen.

According to JNTO figures, 2.46 million tourists have arrived in Japan so far this year. But’s a small portion of the government’s initial 2020 goal of 40 million, which was set to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics that were ultimately postponed due to the epidemic, and the record 31.8 million in 2019.

On October 11, Japan lifted some of the harshest border controls in the world, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is relying on tourism to grow the country’s economy.

The government wants to bring in annual tourist spending of 5 trillion yen (US$38 billion). But considering that there is a labor shortage in Japan’s hospitality industry and that many Chinese citizens are still unable to travel, that may be challenging to achieve.

Nearly a third of all visitors to Japan in 2019—9.5 million in total—were Chinese.
