Blackjack is a casino game with rules that are easy to learn. The goal of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by having a higher total than the dealer without exceeding 21. That’s why it’s also known as 21.
To start a hand, the player must make a bet. The dealer then gives two cards to the player and two cards to themselves, one of which is face up. The face-up card is called the “upcard.” The value of the player’s hand is then calculated based on the value of the cards given.
If the player has a total of 21 or less, they can choose to “hit” and receive another card. If the player goes over 21, they lose their bet. The player can also choose to “stand” and not receive any.
Blackjack is usually played at a table of 5 players and requires about 52 card decks. All number cards (2-10) have their face value. The face cards (Jack, Queen, and King) score 10 points each, and the Ace can either be treated as 1 or 11, depending on the player.
At the beginning of each round, all players place their bets in their betting positions—also called “boxes.” All players receive two cards in their respective betting positions. The dealer also gets two cards, one face-up and the other face-down.
Starting from the left of the dealer, each player is given a chance to draw more cards. Which is ‘hit’ or ‘stand’. If the player calls out ‘HIT’, they receive an extra card. They can then either call out ‘HIT’ again, or ‘STAND’ if they do not wish to draw any more cards then the player can ‘HIT’, but have to aim not to lose (exceed a total of 21).
After each player has played “HIT” or “STAND,” the dealer takes their turn. They can, again, either ‘HIT’ or ‘STAND’. If the dealer’s hand exceeds 21, all players who didn’t bust win immediately; win twice the amount they bet
If the dealer reaches a valid hand, the cards are totaled and each player’s hand is compared to the dealer’s. If the player scores higher than the dealer, they win. If the player ties with the dealer, the bet is returned to the player. Otherwise, the player loses their bet. A perfect hand has an ace with a 10, Jack, Queen, or King.
If the first two cards are a pair, the player can split them to create two hands per seat instead of the normal hand. To fund the split, a player must make his second bet of the same value as the first.
Players can double their bet while hitting after receiving the first two cards. A player that doubles down only get one additional card and cannot hit again.
If a player decides they cannot beat the dealer’s hand, they may choose to fold. With this strategy, the player folds the hand and risks losing only half of their bet instead of the full amount.
