For those who are unfamiliar with casino lingo and terminologies, it can only make the world of gambling even more daunting. On the gaming floor of any casino, you are likely to hear a variety of jargon specific to gambling. And, if you don’t know what they mean, it’s more challenging to keep up in the heat of battle.

To improve your performance and to better understand the work that goes into each play, it helps to be familiar with some of the most important terms and phrases used in casinos. Here are some of them.

ABC Player

For use primarily in the context of poker, this term refers to a player who consistently acts in the same way. Someone who is predictable. A player will play aggressively with a good hand and avoid getting entangled with players holding lesser cards.

Action

Your turn at a casino game is often referred to as “action.” Table games like blackjack and roulette use this term when it is your time to do something. You may hear the dealer say something like, “The action is on you.”

Aggregate Limit and Winnings

The aggregate limit is the maximum amount a casino must pay out in a single round is known as the aggregate limit. At this point, the players may have to settle for less money.

Meanwhile, aggregate winnings refer to what you’ve won in a game overall or cumulatively.

Bankroll

One’s “bankroll” refers to the sum of money one has put aside specifically for use in gambling. For serious gamblers, this is crucial information.

Bluff

A player who tells their opponents they have a strong hand while in reality they have a poor one.

Card washing

It is when the dealer lays out all of the cards face down and mixes them up before shuffling. Because most contemporary casinos use automated shuffling machinery to speed up the game, this term is seldom used.

Chips

Gamblers use chips as their medium of exchange at casinos. Casino table games employ tokens called “chips,” which come in a wide range of colors and values. Poker players in particular are known to be seen “riffling” their chips because they are so enticing to touch.

Croupier

The French word “croupier” is more usually translated as “dealer” or “table host.” Just another casino term that you may add to your vocabulary to impress the other players.

Comp

When a person wagers money at a casino, he or she receives these points or comp points. These may be accumulated and redeemed for various benefits including money, freebies, and items.

Double or nothing

A wager in which the bettor stands to earn twice as much as they risk, yet loses everything. Bets on red or black, or on odd or even in roulette, are two common examples.

Fish

A poker expression for when you keep betting no matter how weak your hand is and you keep losing.

Flush

Another poker term used when a player gets a hand that contains all of the cards of the same suit.

House edge

Casinos are known as “the house.” The house edge refers to the little advantage the casino has over the player over the long term, making it such that every casino game eventually favors the house. The casino would become bankrupt and eventually shut if there was no house advantage.

Odds

The casino has established this as the player’s expected probability of winning. Depending on the odds, the player’s potential payout might be more or less than what was initially bet.
