Common signs of a gambling problem

October 14, 2022 World iGaming & Gambling

Too much of everything isn’t good. Gambling is supposed to be fun and thrilling, but when you have too much of it, that is when it becomes a problem. For some people, it becomes a compulsive activity that can get in the way of their lives.

Here are some early signs of a gambling problem to look out for so that you can keep your times at the casino healthy and enjoyable.

Lying about gambling habits and spending

A person who has a gambling addiction will typically try to conceal their spending at a casino by withholding bank records or receipts. Likewise, they may also make up lies about where they are going in order to avoid being questioned or suspected of gambling. This is an early sign of a gambling problem as the gambler probably no longer understands that keeping such things from their loved ones is unacceptable and that their unhealthy habits will influence not just their own life, but also those around them.

Slowly becoming dysfunctional

A person’s day-to-day activities will be greatly affected if they become addicted to gambling. Another early sign of gambling problems is when someone no longer functions like they used to. They may start struggling at work, avoiding chores and other household duties, or having difficulty sustaining relationships. Moreover, they may even abandon their favorite hobbies and interests in order to gamble.

Being defensive about their gambling habits

Having a gambling problem, just like any other form of addiction, is hard to accept for someone who has it. When individuals become defensive when accused of having a problem, it is probable that the charge is true; and that they are just in denial about it.

If you ever know someone who is going through this, try not to condemn them and tell them how their addiction is hurting your life. This will only make them feel worse about it causing them to deny it even more. The greatest thing you can do is consult with a professional gambling counselor, who can advise you on the best course of action.

Spending beyond their means

Addiction causes people to go to extremes. As people with gambling problems lose their grip on their finances, this may cause them to not stop playing until they have literally no money left. This will then result in them showing signs of financial problems, like borrowing money and not being able to pay it back. In worse cases, some people may commit fraud or steal money and items to sell for money. Committing illegal acts to get money in order to gamble or to recoup losses is a sign of an immediate need for intervention.
