What Makes the Casino St. Moritz So Unique?

October 5, 2022 Europe iGaming & Gambling

Located in Switzerland, the Casino St. Moritz is as classy as you’d expect from a luxury casino, with a range of games like slots, roulette and baccarat for visitors to choose from.

Yet, its location high in the Alpine region means that it also offers some unique advantages that are worth knowing about if you’re considering a trip here.

The Basic Details
Casino St. Moritz is located in the stylish St. Moritz village, which is one of the most luxurious and glamorous tourist destinations in Europe. At an altitude of 1833 metres above sea level, this is the highest casino in Switzerland as well as one of the highest in Europe.

One of the differences you’ll note when comparing to online casinos is that there are fewer games in the land-based casino. For example, when looking for the best slots to play online you’ll find hundreds of varied titles at the top sites. The huge scope means that there’s a lot of diversity, with titles like Money Train 3, Starburst XXXtreme and Book of Dead. This casino St. Moritz instead has a smaller selection of just over 60 slots.

The range of games here does compare well with other, similarly-sized land casinos. Only the truly giant casinos in places like Las Vegas and Macau have vastly bigger game collections than St. Moritz, so it competes well at a European level in terms of diversity. For example, there are tables offering American roulette and a couple of blackjack tables too.

You’ll need to take along some sort of official ID like a passport or EU driving licence, as entry is strictly limited to those over the age of 21. It’s free to enter this Swiss casino and the action runs until 3 in the morning. It opens at 4pm from Sunday to Thursday, and at 4pm on Friday and Saturday. However, you should be aware that the table games begin at 8pm.

What Else Can You Do in St. Moritz?
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this casino is that its location gives you a wealth of other things to do before or after your trip to the casino. This is where Alpine tourism began in the 19th century, and it also hosted the Winter Olympics on a couple of occasions, so it’s clear that this place is ideal if you like skiing.

There are more than 350 kilometres of pistes in the surrounding area, with state-of-the-art facilities making it one of Europe’s best ski resorts. One of the world’s oldest ice bob runs is located here and there are more than 150 kilometres of walking trails as well as longer cross-country skiing tracks. Other options include curling and snowboarding.

As you would expect, a high-quality ski resort like this has a wealth of dining possibilities for tourists to enjoy. This list of Michelin-rated restaurants in the area includes 15 eateries, including Ecco St. Moritz, Chasellas and Paradiso. Given its fame as a luxury resort, it’s no surprise to find that the quality on offer is excellent and that the prices are generally high.

If you come here during the summer months, you can enjoy sports such as horse riding, windsurfing, sailing, climbing and tennis. In terms of sightseeing in and around St. Moritz village, the leaning tower is a favourite spot for taking photos. This was part of the Church of St. Mauritius, most of which was destroyed in 1893 while this slightly inclined tower remains in place.

It’s easy to see why St. Moritz has developed into a world-famous tourist destination. The casino here is just part of the area’s appeal but it’s definitely worth checking out if you like the idea of playing a few games.
