Covid-19 in China: Shenzhen tightens controls amid BA.2 outbreak
China’s southern technology hub Shenzhen has tightened Covid-19 controls as it tries to stop the spread of highly infectious Omicron subvariant BA.2.
It comes as mainland China reported 101 locally transmitted infections and 49 imported cases on Monday. Eight of the local cases were in Shenzhen and the city also recorded 13 asymptomatic infections, which are not counted in China’s official tally.
Shenzhen, in Guangdong province, has been trying to quell an outbreak since July 15. Daily case numbers have been in single or double digits – low by global standards, but the city’s leaders have stepped up testing and monitoring in line with Beijing’s tough zero-Covid policy.
