Macau VIP baccarat falls below MOP$2 billion in 2Q22, now just 23% of GGR

July 19, 2022 Macau Earnings & FilingsIndustry Updates

Macau’s VIP segment continued its downward spiral in the three months to 30 June 2022, with figures released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) showing VIP GGR fell to just MOP$1.99 billion (US$246 million).

With industry-wide GGR reported at MOP$8.65 billion (US$1.07 billion) for the quarter, VIP’s contribution represented just 23.0% of all revenue, down from 27.0% in 1Q22. By comparison, VIP had contributed 38.3% of industry GGR in 1Q21 and 44.7% in 4Q19.

Aside from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, VIP baccarat revenues have been hit hard by mainland China’s war on cross-border gambling and the collapse of Macau’s junket industry following the arrests of former Suncity Group CEO Alvin Chau in November and Tak Chun Group CEO Levo Chan in January.

The DICJ’s figures also showed mass market baccarat GGR fell by more than half from MOP$10.82 billion (US$1.34 billion) in 1Q22 to MOP$5.08 billion (US$628 million) in 2Q22, with its contribution to industry-wide GGR falling slightly from 60.3% to 58.7%.
