People urged to beware of cybercrimes

December 24, 2021 Crime & Legal

Interior Ministry Anti-Cyber Crime Department deputy director Brigadier General Pheak Thearith and Technology Department director Lieutenant Colonel Chhay Bunrom Manit in an exclusive interview with Khmer Times for Cross-Talk, discussed how victims of counterfeit products have increased since buyers tend to purchase online more during the Covid-19 pandemic. He warns people to be careful when buying products online as they cannot inspect the goods before the purchase is made.

KT: What is the scope of the Anti-Cyber Crime Department and how does technology play a role?

Brig Gen Thearith: Since the development of technology is very strong, so is using the internet. Smartphones play an important role for people in general and especially the youth to support their daily occupations and at the same time the “opportunist persons” take the opportunity to cheat other people.

Now we have a Cybercrime Law being drafted. The law that we are implementing now is from the Civil Code and Criminal Code in enacted in 2009. The law covering human trafficking and sex exploitation was in 2008. We have another law against money laundering and terrorism in 2013, the media law in 2005 and the law on illegal gambling in 1991.

We have the law on intersectoral ministries about the dissemination of social media and a weblink of the whole Kingdom in 2018, of which three ministries are involved, the Information Ministry, the Interior Ministry and the Posts Ministry.
