Korean gambling law
There are many legal casinos in South Korea, but not all of them can be used for legal gambling by Korean nationals. Among the 16 casinos, only the Gangwon Paradise Casino in Gangwon Province is available for Koreans, and the rest are restricted to foreigners.
Several Chinese once played Majhong in a residential unit in Suwon City, South Korea. Although it was only a social activity between relatives and friends, it involved money and committed the crime of opening a casino. Don’t think that foreigners will not break the law when gambling money in South Korea. In fact, accidents will happen if you are not careful.
In the past two decades, the South Korean government has slowly relaxed its gambling prohibition policy, allowing citizens to bet on horse races, lotteries, and cycling events through legal channels. Gambling is not completely prohibited.
According to Article 246 of Chapter 23 of the Korean Criminal Law, if someone participates in gambling for the purpose of increasing assets, the maximum penalty is 5 million won. If the person is “”habitual gambling”” (high frequency and obvious gambling habits), the maximum penalty can be imposed 20 million won and imprisonment for 3 years. Since South Korea uses the nationality principle to enforce the law, even if South Koreans go to overseas legal casinos to gamble, they have the opportunity to be punished.
